Sanding Machines for the Woodworking Industry

The key to the quality of finishing any wood product is the sanding operation. A sander or sanding machine is a piece of equipment that is used to smooth surfaces by abrasion with sandpaper. They are used to finish wood, plastic, or composites through the application of abrasive belts, discs, or sheets.

There are many different types of products, including two main types of belt sanders: contact-wheel and edge. Contact-wheel belt sanders consist of a driven contact-wheel and a tensioning idler wheel or pulley. Abrasive belts are mounted on both the contact wheel and the idler wheel.

These power tools can come in handheld forms but we at MPS Machines specialise in high quality, dedicated and automated machinery. These allow you the greatest reliability and precision when sanding materials.

Types of Sanding Machines

There are a number of different ways of sanding and finishing. These can be for handheld machines or mounted on automated machinery. For example, out Cefla Smartsand 2 had orbital sanding units. Here are a number of sanding machines:
Flap sander units - a sanding attachment shaped like a Rolodex
Belt sanding units - an electric motor that turns a pair of drums on which a continuous loop of sandpaper is mounted.
Disk sanders - a disk sander consists of a replaceable circular shaped sandpaper attached to a wheel turned by an electric motor or compressed air
Orbital Sanders - a sander that vibrates in small circles, or "orbits." The sanding disk spinning while moving simultaneously in small ellipses causes the orbital action that it is known for.

Types of Automatic Finishing
There are six main types of automated sanding,
calibration sanding - specifically designed to hold tight tolerances while providing an exceptional finish.
veneer or finish sanding -Veneer and lacquer are two popular coverings that enhance the aesthetic of wood. This sanding technique makes sure there is an even finish to the core.
brush sanding - Brushes can be used in a variety of woodworking applications, including de-nibbing, breaking edges, scuff sanding, or ensuring an even colour on cabinet doors.
orbital sanding - The orbital sander allows it to get in corners and up against edges.
profile sanding. - Profile sanders can be used for sanding in tight corners, or along grooves or ruts.

Five factors affecting calibration sanding include: type of material to be removed, chip load, feed speed, workpiece width, and the abrasive belt. The goal of calibration is to make everything flat. The flatter it can be made, the more uniform it can be made and the easier it is to apply finish and to sand the finish between coats.

Why Use Machinery?

The goal of veneer/finish sanding is to prepare the surface for stain or finish. This method is used to remove defects in the wood, material handling marks, organic residue and other fibres from the surface of the board.

They are perfect for industrial and production settings due to their automation and are suitable for sanding any type of panel, flat or shaped. The ease of customisation is one of the main benefits of using a dedicated sanding machine rather than other electric sanders. The machines can be equipped with multipurpose brushes with two-way rotation, which can simultaneously use two different types of sanding paper, for complex sanding requirements.
